Let's be sure to start supporting these Metal gigs!

<rant>
I'm sure everyone has noticed but for those of you that haven't...fewer and fewer metal shows are being booked due to poor turnouts recently.  Frank has been turning away many good bands as he's sick of losing money.  He was hoping for the best, but the poor turnout for Napalm Death was the straw that broke the camel's back and led to cancellation of the Mayhem show.  Mayhem in Thunder Bay!  They aren't my favourites, but that was certainly going to be entertaining...was.   sad

Although he loves the scene and music, Frank cannot be expected to take a hit every time he books a show - that's just not good business.  Next time I see Frank, I will be sure to personally thank him for the many quality metal shows he has booked over the last year or two - (if you appreciate what he was trying to do lately, you should do the same).  Sadly that has come to an end and I doubt that he will change his mind until he sees things turn around drastically!   I am quite certain that Tyler, who was also responsible for booking great bands here in the past, threw in the towel for the same reason.

The other promoters in town (sorry I don't know you by name) will continue to have my full support as I attend every possible metal show that I can.  You won't hear from me "Well, I'm not really into them" or "They suck, I wish my favourite band 'insert name here' would come."  Well, guess what people - your faves never have a chance of being booked if the smaller shows don't draw.  Who in their right mind would bother?  If this keeps up, there won't be any metal shows left to attend, no matter how small the band.

Frank brings in Sepultura, a damn big name in metal, regardless of the presence of the Cavalera brothers or not, and nothing but bitching about it.  "Well, it isn't Sepultura without Max so I'm not going."  Jeezus, Sepultura has been around as long without Max as it was with him in the band.  For those of you that opted to skip that show, you missed a great show, and until things change, likely the last BIG show in a small venue.

It's an opportunity to get out of the house for a few hours with some buddies, fellow metalheads, bullshit about metal, reminisce about the old days....whatever.  But, you're there, the promoters can pay the bands without having to make an ATM withdrawl before the end of the night, and they have more confidence booking that next show.

If you're waiting for your absolute favourite band to play here before attending a show, you will take that wish with you to the grave.  Maybe it's time to expand your list of gigs you'll attend...you may even find a new favourite band.  You'll never know unless you give it a shot.
</rant>

I shall now step down from my soap box.  Hope to see you at SkullFist!

So you propose that people put their valuable money and time towards going to shows they don't want to see, on the off chance that a band they do want to see might play sometime in the future? That's ridiculous logic. Do you go see movies you don't like just in case that theater might screen a movie that you do? Do you eat at bad restaurants as incentive for them to put better food on the menu?

No, no...it shouldn't have come out like that.  lol  I'm not saying as a country music fan you should go to see Cannibal Corpse next time they're here...maybe you'll like them!  haha

But, unless you are one of those narrow-minded people who says "I like sludge and will listen to nothing but..."  Here is a typical conversation I've had with so-called "metal fans" I know or have heard of similar conversations from buddies:

Me: "Hey, next Thursday, this band out of Calgary 'Whatever' is playing at Kilroys.  They're a death metal/deathcore band a bit like 'other band',  Do you wanna go check them out?"
Other person: "Well, next Thursday the Big Bang Theory is on, and I've never heard of this band."  (Almost insinuating if he never heard of them, how good could they be)
Me: "Listen, go check them out at their website (or myspace page, whatever) because I think you'll like them."
Other person: "Well, we'll see..."

And that's the last I hear about it.

We pay so little for shows here it's not even funny.  Majority of shows like SkullFist, Holy Grail, Cauldron etc. cost around $7-10.  Obviously, if you're living in a box behind a dumpster on Court St., that's a lot of money, but come on - people spend 5$ on a damn specialty coffee, sometimes 2X a day!  Even the BIG shows that have come through, people complain about $20...often the same show is charging $30 or $35 at their next stop!

I would say this, if iwrestledabearonce was booked to play here, I would have reservations about going because for the life of me I just cannot get into them...I've tried.  However, if a few buddies said they were going, I'd probably join.  Maybe they have some tunes I will like...  I'm willing to give most metal bands a chance.  These guys make all their money on the road now, not from album sales.  Between digital media, downloads, and record company execs raping bands over, being on the road is the only way to survive.

I am afraid I have to agree here... I was going to see Mayhem... don't really listen to them much, but they are black metal and are legendary in their own right, so i figured what the hell. Personally though I've never liked Napalm Death... I think they sound like shit and the whole grindcore genre for that matter in my opinion is crap. So should I go see a grindcore band i can't stand in the hopes that Satyricon or Amon Amarth or Emperor will come here? That's flawed logic man. I love that Frank was trying to bring in the big acts, and I give him full cred for all the hard work he does for the scene here... but you can't ask people to support bands they don't like.

I'm a minor, can't get into these shows yet..So sick and tired of hearing bout people bitching/complaining bout not gong to metal shows, cause they don't like the band or this.  When there were all ages shows, I was going to them all, even the bands I don't like..Why? cause the more people at those shows, get back to agents who will look at booking bigger bands in Thunder Bay..Napalm Death has a pretty good name to themselfs, after the gig, where it seems like no one wen't,there management tells the word, of the shit turnout here, get's back to other bands, who all thinks Fuck Thunder Bay..So you will never get to see bands like Amon Amarth,Satyricon etec come through here..Even if Amon Amarth came here, people would still find a excuse not to go..The hype on napalm was awesome, show time comes....well

First off, and let me make this perfectly CLEAR. I AINT DONE WITH METAL OR ANY GENRE. and obviously some ppl have seen me go to ATM machine
so thats funny.
Many ppl have been noticing an influx of DJS , well in my life depending on who u spoke to CROCKS was a metal bar, punk bar, hip hop club, grunge bar, fag bar, supper club, biker bar, indian bar and now douchebag preppy bar with the hottest chicks in the city apparently (i have been told good looking chicks are bad for business lol by some ), whatever,
hell i think cbc radio tried to describe Crash Test Dummies as a "Punk folk band" and for awhile they felt that every band playing there were punk bands.
My entire career has been one major social study and in order to survive in the nusic business you adapt.
I like to engage with everyone I can, even though I am becoming less of a fan of these forums, cause its us same ppl and there is no growth strategy here.
i dont want to bitch or whine or self gloat, just not my style, but a few things i come to term with.

In my opinion, (and that can change very quickly) there are only so many shows this city can handle in any genre based on a whole pile of factors.
Example, we were doing so many hip hop shows that ppl stopped showing up and i started racking up major losses. Beatnuts, that just played to a full house, did well cause there hadnt been a decent show in awhile.
The sub genre ( hate that term btw ) scenes , max out maybe at 500 to 600. So thats maybe 2500 ppl between the ages of 19 to 35 that are supporting
these mini scenes like metal, hip hop, punk, w/e. That might be higher or lower and based on ppl who I believe are out there supporting by going out.
Now when someone like myself books a band like Sepultura or Mayhem ( please keep in mind. with no offense to small metal shows ) that they are asking 700 to 1k for riders ), major advertising, proper sound and lites and real fucking security, not your buddy at the door thats wasted.
If you get 10% of each sub genre, due to excuses, lack of interest, work, general bs, you max out at 80 ppl like napalm death ( 4x original attendance at crocks so hey thats a 200% increase lol or w/e.
With mainstream there are close to 42 000 ppl between 19 and 35, so if same 10% go out thats a lot of full houses and i dont give a shit if they cant make it cause so many # it dont matter.
I am going to always book live, but i am not an idiot. The best shows this year in metal have all lost more than 2ooo each. If I cant get more than 10% of the metal fans out i mite as well just stick to the 5 00 concerts everyone is content with. It is what it is.
I will continue my little journey because im still pretty damn lucky to be able to continue with this. Dont ever think Im gna stop, cause I work harder at this shit than anyone, and i dont sleep lol

If you are a supporter of independant films you do. I also do not support cookie cutter franchises, never have, never will. If I see an independant restaurant with a decent overall menu I support it 100%. I have had the best meals at Kangas and their worst lol

On that note, everything  decent seems to be located in PA or am I wrong. Supporting independant culture, promotes and encourages growth. Look at calico, bean fiend, sov,a shit load of others, all doing well and thriving in PA. Id rather pay Brian Hamilton 10 00 for a sandwich at Bean Fiend, than go to Applebees. If more ppl did that, t bay will become a cooler place to live. So yea, in my opinion, you cut non corporate hard working independants a break. If they are toatally useless , of course not.
